23th March 2009 - "Leaving Ball" of the Institute of Pharmacy terminated

In July 2008 (summer term semester) and February 2010 (winter term semester) there was no leaving ball because of too low interest of the students in their final term to participate, despite the availability of funding to co-sponsor the ball. Due to this lack of interest, therefore for the time being no leaving balls will be organized. Prof. Müller dropped his role as university patron of the ball.

Press release Freie Universität Berlin 13 November 2008:

Professor Rainer H. Müller für Innovationspreis Berlin-Brandenburg 2008 nominiert Pharmazeut der Freien Universität Berlin entwickelt ultrafeine Wirkstoffkristalle

Nr. 361/2008 vom 13.11.2008

31, Tel. =30 – 838 506 78, Fax: 030 – 838 506 16, mail: nanoteam@gmx.com, homepages: www.muller-berlin.com, www.ewps.org

30 – 31 May 2008 : European Workshop on Particulate Systems (EWPS)

At the end of May Professor Müller and Dr. Keck organize EWPS in Berlin, this event will celebrate “one decade EWPS”. EWPS is the research network of leading institutes of pharmaceutical technology and biopharmaceutics in different countries of Europe. EWPS focuses on nanotechnology, that means nanocarriers which deliver drugs in an optimized way, ideally transport drugs to their desired site of action (drug targeting). The meeting will be opened by Professor Dr. P.P. Speiser from Switzerland, the father of polymeric pharmaceutical nanoparticles for drug delivery. Vice president Professor Dr. M. Schäfer-Korting will deliver a welcome address on behalf of the Free University of Berlin. The meeting is sponsored by the Free University of Berlin and the European Association of Pharma Biotechnology (EAPB) as academic sponsors and from pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry. The sponsoring companies are Juvena Switzerland, PharmaSol GmbH Berlin and Soliqs/Abbott Germany/US as platinum sponsors and Brookwood/Alabama in US and Dr. Rimpler GmbH/Wedemark in Germany as gold sponsors.

1st February 2007 : NLC technology/nanopearls in the press
The nanolipid carrier (NLC) technology developed by Prof. Rainer H. Müller has meanwhile been introduced to almost 20 cosmetic products on the cosmetic market. The first products were introduced by Dr. Rimpler GmbH/Germany. The cosmetic trade name of these lipid nanoparticles is Nanopearls. The cosmetic journal "Kosmetik International" published an interview and product information about NLC/Nanopearls in the issue January 2007.

Page 1    Page 2    Page 3

5th January 2007 : Cooperation Dr. Rimpler GmbH and Prof. Müller/FU
The concept of lipid nanoparticles was developed by Prof. Müller and his research group. The nanostructured lipid carriers (NLC) were developed as second generation in 1999/2000. In lipid nanoparticle technology the same concept was followed as with the liposomes. They appeared first in cosmetic products (Dior, 1986) before they entered the pharmaceutical market. In cooperation with Dr. Rimpler the first NLC-based cosmetic product was realised in 2004 (product Nanorepair, cosmetic line "Dr. Rimpler Kosmetik"). In the year 2006 the next products followed in the cosmetic line "Isabelle Lancray, Paris". In 2006 the product developed by Dr. Rimpler based on Prof. Müller's NLC technology was awarded with the so-called "Cosmetic Oscar" for the "most innovative cosmetic product of the year 2006". That means the year 2006 was very successful for Dr. Rimpler, this is especially nice because it is the 20 year anniversary of the Dr. Rimpler cosmetic line and the 60 year anniversary of the line "Isabelle Lancray"
(summary article in BEAUTY FORUM 12/2006).

11th December 2006 : Prof. Müller's NLC technology: triple "Cosmetic Oscar" winner

11th December 2006 : Innovation prize nomination Berlin-Brandenburg

NLC technology entered the cosmetic market In the nineties the first generation of lipid nanoparticles, the SLN (solid lipid nanoparticles) was developed by the research group of Prof. Müller, the second generation followed at the turn of the millenium, the NLC (nanostructured lipid carriers). The NLC have advantages compared to the first generation, e. g. improved loading capacity for actives.

The first two cosmetic products based on the NLC technology were introduced to the market by the company Dr. Rimpler GmbH in Wedemark/Hannover in Germany. The products NanoRepair Q10 Creme and NanoRepair Q10 Serum were introduced to the market during the cosmetic fair "Beauty" in Munich on 29/30 October 2005. More details about the technology and the products can be found in an
article in EuroCosmetics 11/12 2005, page 28ff. Information about the company can be obtained from www.rimpler.de.

PhD student Franziska Rank - no. 58 - graduated
On Wednesday, 7 December 2005, the 58th PhD student in Prof. Müller's research group graduated: Dr. Franziska Rank. She obtained her PhD in the area quality management (QM), the title of the thesis was:
"Integrated Management System (IMS) for Quality Assuarance in Pharmaceutical Production - Analysis and Model Development".

The research was a joint project between Schering AG in Berlin and the pharmacy department/Free University of Berlin. The many joint research PhD projects going on between the pharmacy department and companies demonstrate that not only basic research but also applied research is being performed in Berlin.

December 2004 - DFG network application brain targeting
In December 2004 an application was filled to the German Research council (DFG) to establish a DFG reseach network of DFG-Schwerpunktprogramm "Targeted drug delivery to the brain". This initiative was started by Prof. Müller in spring 2004. About 14 research groups from different disciplines all over Germany worked together to establish a concept having a sufficient quality to be acceptable as a topic by the DFG "Schwerpunktprogramm". At the end of the discussion process, about 30 research groups filed an application to improve delivery of drugs to the brain. The concept is based on the discovery by Prof. Kreuter / Frankfurt How to get nanoparticles across the blood brain barrier. Speaker of the group is Prof. Müller / Free University of Berlin, vice speaker is Prof. Fahr, pharmacy department at the university of Jena.

AAPS in Baltimore 7-11 November 2004
The American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) has held its annual meeting in the convention centre in Baltimore/Maryland in USA. It was a successful annual meeting with about 8,000 participants. The research group of Prof Müller was represented by 12 poster presentations and one invited lecture given by Prof Müller personally.
The title of the presentation was Lipid nanoparticles for parenteral drug delivery.
The following members of the research team were presented the meeting: Torsten Göppert, Norma Hernández-Trejo, Conny Keck, Jan Möschwitzer and Eliana Souto.
The AAPS meeting is the most important conference for the research team of Prof Müller, especially with regard to establishing research contacts to pharmaceutical industry. The scientific AAPS meeting is accompanied by a company exhibition, about 1,000 companies are regularily present with a booth.

Baltimore: Meeting with Story Musgrave / NASA astronaut
Parallel to the AAPS annual conference in Baltimore, Prof Rainer H Müller and pharmacist Conny Keck met Dr Story Musgrave.
Dr Musgrave joined NASA as scientistastronaut in August 1967. Dr Musgrave is a veteran of six space flights, spending a total of 1,281 hours in space. His first flight was on space shuttle Challenger in 1983, followed by flights with the space shuttles Discovery and Endeavour. The Endeavour flight in 1993 was the first Hubble Space Telescope (HST) servicing and repair mission. During this 11-day flight, the HST was restored to its capabilities during a record of 5 space walks by the astronauts. Dr Musgrave performed 3 of these space walks.
Most recently, Dr Musgrave served aboard space shuttle Columbia. The most interesting topic addressed by Dr Musgrave in the discussion was the perfect separation of 2-dimensional electrophoretic gels, one of the major research areas of Prof Müller. In space it is possible to separate proteins in an ideal manor.

Annual meeting of Controlled Release Society (CRS) from 20-26 July 2004 in Honolulu/Hawaii.
The annual meeting of the Controlled Release Society (CRS) took place in Honolulu this year. CRS is the largest society in America to deal with general issues of controlled release in various areas, that means pharmacy but also for example cosmetics, food and agriculture.
The research group of Prof Müller presented a total of 4 poster contributions to this meeting. PhD students of Prof Müller attending this meeting were Conny Keck, Boris Petri and Felix Tröster.
Apart from scientific highlights, of course Honolulu had its striking features such as Waikiki Beach, a beautiful sand beach with nice palm trees and excellent cocktails in various bars located at the beach. Highly recommended, and attended, was the pub The Mouse having a happy hour from 4-8 p.m. All cocktails with the volume of 0.4 l (!) were served for prices ranging from 2.00 to 2.50 USD (equivalent to app 1.50€ to 2.00 €). The Mouse was heavily frequented not only by the research team from Berlin but also by other scientists.

July , 2004 - PhD student number 50 !
On Mr. Stefan Anger completed his PhD under the supervision of Prof. Müller. Mr. Anger was the PhD student number 50 concluding succesfully his thesis. The thesis was awarded with the best possible grade "summa cum laude". The picture shows Prof. Müller handing over the traditional "PhD present" of the research group, Galilea thermometer. The spheres of the thermometer are indicating the respective temperature, represent the nanoparticles, the major research topic of the group.

AAPS meeting in Salt Lake City 26-30 October 2003
The annual meeting of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) in 2003 took place in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Utah is very well known more one state of the US. The research group of Prof Müller contributed a total of 16 poster presentations. The research team was represented by the PhD students Aslihan Akkar, Felix Tröster, Boris Petri, Anne Saupe, Ilona Buttle, Conny Keck, and Nadim Bushrab.
Salt Lake City is famous for the Mormon Temple and the Adjacent Mormon Conference Centre. The Mormon Conference Centre was especially built to gather many Mormons for one big convention once a year. Of course, access to nice bars and fun is limited, therefore in case you go to Salt Lake City you should buy a club card to have also pleasure in the clubs during the night. All members of the research team of Prof Müller were club members from the first day. To sum up: AAPS in Salt Lake City was a very successful meeting because new research ideas were created and research links established.
